Will demonstrate outside Fresno County Registrar of Voters on election night to protest the ongoing denial of their right to have their votes counted
(FRESNO)—Farmworkers from Gerawan Farms in Fresno will gather at the county elections office on election night to hold a candlelight vigil to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their vote to decertify the UFW, which took place on November 5, 2013.
“Everybody has the right to vote in a free and fair election and the right to have that vote counted. People who vote on Tuesday know that their votes will be counted. We had the same expectation when we voted last year to fire the UFW. It is now a year later, our votes remain in a box, uncounted, and our rights are still being denied,” said Silvia Lopez, a longtime farmworker at Gerawan.
WHO: Farmworkers from Gerawan Farms, who voted last year to fire the UFW and whose right to participate in a free and fair election have been denied by the state.
WHAT: Host a candlelight vigil on election night to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their vote to decertify the UFW and the state’s subsequent refusal to count those votes.
WHEN: Tuesday, November 4, 2014, beginning at 7:30pm
WHERE: Outside Fresno County Registrar of Voters
2221 Kern Street
Fresno, CA 93721
Farmworkers from Gerawan participated in a legal election on November 5, 2013, to determine whether to continue being represented by the UFW. Knowing that they would lose the election, the UFW has engaged in a campaign of lies and intimidation to ensure that the farmworkers’ votes are never counted.
